South is an inner city Calgary neighborhood just minutes from downtown. South Calgary has older homes dating back to 1945. Because of its proximity to Calgary’s core, it is a popular neighborhood for infills as well. As part of Calgary’s urban redevelopment plan, the City of Calgary has encouraged new infill homes and the renovation of older homes in South Calgary to enhance urban lifestyle options for home buyers.

In the City of Calgary’s 2012 Civic census, South Calgary had a population of 3,642 living in 1805 dwellings, a 3.6% decrease from its 2010 population of 3,746. Of that 3,642, 49 % of South Calgary’s population is between the ages of 25-45. Also, 35% of people living in South Calgary have a university degree or higher.

South Calgary is one of four communities, together with Altadore, River Park, and Garrison Woods, which collectively are known as the Marda Loop Community Association. The MLCA has its community centre in South Calgary.

South Calgary has a wide range of attractive features, amenities and services. It is next to the Marda Loop shopping area where over 100 trendy boutiques, shops, cafes, restaurants and unique businesses line the popular stretches of 33rd and 34th Avenues SW. While it is close to the core of downtown Calgary, South Calgary is also near to a stunning park system full of recreational opportunities. River Park and Sandy Park together cover 54 hectares along the Elbow River and provide a genuine natural oasis in the centre of Calgary, just north of the Glenmore Reservoir. River Park includes a large designated off leash area. Sandy Park includes picnic areas, BBQ stands, bike and pedestrian pathways, playgrounds, washrooms, as well as canoe and raft access to the Elbow River.
In addition to being quite close to River Park and Sandy Park, South Calgary has an outdoor pool at the Marda Loop Community Association centre, tennis courts, outdoor and indoor skating rinks, a curling rink, and it is close to an indoor pool, and two golf courses.
