Mount Pleasant celebrated its 100th birthday as a Calgary community in 2012.  As such, it has homes as old as a century, but also houses built in more recent decades.  The trees are mature, and the community has excellent access south  to the downtown core, and north, as well as east-west along the TransCanada highway.  It is known for its great access to a range of schools, and the North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre.


BOUNDARIES

On its northern  border, the Community of Mount Pleasant is next to the large urban park, Confederation Park.  Its western boundary is 10th Street, southern boundary is 16th Avenue, the TransCanada Highway, and its eastern boundary is 2nd Street NW.

DEMOGRAPHICS

In the City of Calgary’s 2012 municipal census, Mount Pleasant had a population of 4,851 living in 2,654 dwellings, a 2.8% increase from its 2011 population of 4,718. With a land area of 1.9 km2 (0.73 sq mi), it had a population density of 2,550/km2 (6,610/sq mi) in 2012.

Residents in this community had a median household income of $48,334 in 2000, and there were 15.3% low income residents living in the neighborhood. As of 2000, 14.4% of the residents were immigrants. A proportion of 24.7% of the buildings were condominiums or apartments, and 40.4% of the housing was used for renting.

The Mount Pleasant Community Association has an outdoor swimming pool, and a Sportsplex which contains a skating/hockey rink.

AMENITIES AND SERVICES

North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre has been offering fine arts classes and studio space to Calgarians of all ages and abilities for more than 25 years.  Housed in a heritage property built as a school in 1913, North Mount Pleasant ceramics and visual arts classes are varied and appeal to all levels of personal competency.

Mount Pleasant  is bordered by one of Calgary’s inner city cemetaries, Queen’s Park.


PARKS and RECREATION

The Mount Pleasant Community Association provides access to an outdoor swimming pool, and an indoor skating/hockey rink.  There are 3 tennis courts available to the public in Mount Pleasant at 30th Avenue and 9th Street NW. There are also 3 public golf courses located close to Mount Pleasant’s boundaries:

Bus route #404 makes a circuit around the community of Mount Pleasant.  Bus routes #19 and 119 travel along the southern border of the community which is 16th Avenue (TransCanada Highway #1), bus route #4 goes north, and bus route #2 goes south.
